Godfather of the West Coast Graffiti Movement
Painter Β· Sculptor Β· Muralist Β· Pioneer
Kelly Graval, known as RISK, was born in 1967 in New Orleans and moved to Los Angeles in 1983. He attended University High School and co-founded the WCA (West Coast Artists) crew in 1985, before studying at the Pasadena Art Institute and USC.
RISK pioneered the West Coast graffiti movement β the first Los Angeles artist to paint a New York subway car (1988), the first to paint freeway overpasses and highway signage at scale, and the first West Coast artist to paint freight trains.
His studio compound in Thousand Oaks, CA β known as Compound Contemporary β has been compared to Andy Warhol's Factory by Forbes magazine. His work spans graffiti, neon sculpture, mixed-media wall installations, large-scale murals, painting, and fashion.
He founded Third Rail streetwear in 1992, which ran for approximately 15 years. His Color Wash murals β defined by sweeping vertical bands of pure spray paint color with long organic drips β include the largest mural in North America (85,000 sq ft, Canada).

Establishing RISK as a major force in the secondary market for street art and contemporary sculpture.
Compound Contemporary is RISK's legendary studio complex in Thousand Oaks, California β a sprawling creative factory that serves as the epicenter of his artistic output, a residency for visiting artists, and a full-scale fabrication facility.
More than a studio, the Compound is a living philosophy β the belief that serious art requires serious infrastructure, serious community, and serious commitment to craft.
The Compound houses painting studios, fabrication shops, neon bending, archival storage, and active residencies for emerging and established artists. It is both a working studio and a monument to the idea that art-making is a full-contact, industrial pursuit.
